Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" or unpaid search results. Typically, the higher a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. This will be based on several factors, but it relates to domain authority, inbound links, and the strength of the content that your website provides.  Don't worry, there are tools (like Google Analytics) and methods to help you improve all of those things and ensure you start to get the results you desire from the industry segments and products/services you want to promote.  SEO is something that changes quite frequently based on the search algorithms, so it takes someone that lives and breathes this for it to be as effective as possible.  This is something that warrants attention regularly to maximize results - especially if you are in business on a national or global scale.

Search Engine Optimization doesn't happen over night - it is a marathon, not a sprint (and a good example of a sprint would be a paid campaign to drive you traffic). Typically, a solid campaign takes a minimum of 3 months to move the needle and really 6-9 months of concerted effort to maximize your results - with someone monitoring and optimizing the process every step of the way.
